The one thing I learned in high school was understanding the complexities of relationships. On this day nine of no complaints, I'm grateful for that lesson. In high school, teens tend to separate themselves from those who outwardly don't look like them or act like them. This behavior never changes, even as an adult. I've worked at many different places and I often see the same separation. Whether its divided by race, gender, class, athleticism, beauty, smarts or so many more "titles", people split up. It saddens me a bit because, I've always prided myself on making friends with all types of people from all types of backgrounds. When I at 40 years of age, see adults my age and older assimilating to the high school way of doing things I can't help but shake my head. As an adult I see people mostly dividing up by class, beauty and race. It's weird. Its an unspoken lesson in high school. One that I honestly believe should be discussed. How great would it be to have classes about diversity and inclusion that were requirements? How great would it be to be taught to accept all people even if they don't seem to be "just" like you? Then, by the time you become an adult you're not the lone wolf sitting at a table by yourself at the corporate luncheon.....but I digress!!! One can dream right? Today, I have no complaints. My life is filled with family and friends from all different walks of life. I love and appreciate my mother for making sure that I valued my own background, limitations, and gifts while simultaneously accepting different qualities from others. I have no complaints, because I feel truly blessed to have been to the places i've been and seen the things i've seen. How amazing!! If you see someone sitting by themselves, in a corner looking alone or lost, go over and include them. It's free and it will make you feel great. Day Ten tomorrow...until then have a great night!!! -Tamieka |
