When I reminisce about my dads family I think about so many moments. I think about catching fish using sticks with my brother Zeb. I think about taking my cousin Rebecca to see Usher. As I reminisce I recall the first time holding Angelina when she was a baby. I’m reminded of the time me and my Grandma unexpectedly spent the night at my Uncles and his lady Wendy’s and I had to share a bed with my cousin Danielle who kept asking me a million questions lol (she probably doesn’t remember). When I recall moments related to my dads family I remember getting ready to take professional photos with my cousins Shakir, Kylia, Kila and Deniqua and we all toppled off of the platform. I can’t help but remember my baby bro Trevor jumping on me and full of incredible energy. I remember visiting my Uncle Jimmy and holding his youngest son Marquis in my arms. Sadness turns to joy when I think of my cousin Shakir’s son Jahlen and the opportunity she presented to have people including me give to others in his name. I have tons of memories of me looking at my cousin Tina as someone I looked up to and admired. My memories run the gamut from barbecues at Aunties and Grandmas to words of encouragement from Loretta, Bisco and Eddie. Watching my Dad marry Rachel and Zeb and Christina hold their children have been highlights.
But as I think about my Knowings family and honor them for Black History Month, there’s one memory that stands above the rest. The memory of my Grandma standing in her kitchen frying chicken with her hand in the apron pocket. I once asked her what the secret ingredient was. Her response? A lot of love!!! Haha And that was it!!! So, I leave you with this....remember love makes everything better. Use it!!
