Known to much of my family as Ma and Pa Squires, Abraham and Salome had 9 children following their marriage in 1888 who they would name Effie, Dorothy, Florence, George, Gretchen, Howard, Leon, Lillian and Walter. Abraham and Salome would go on to live with their family in Amityville, NY on Albany Ave until their passings. Abraham departed in the year 1942 and Salome passed on August 22, 1964. The numerous amounts of family members that they’ve left behind continues to expand. Many relatives continue to celebrate each other and their familial legacy every year at their family reunion in August.
Today I honor them for Black History Month. Although I know many family members may be offended that I’ve chosen them as representatives of Black History due to their Native American backgrounds I felt that it was important to highlight that their historical presence in our ancestral legacy is not only Native American but African American too.
