Many many years ago, a co worker and I were talking on the eve of my last day working for the company. She knew beyond anything that we would remain friends no matter what. Me being a true "optimistic" said to her, we'll see. I told her that I know that real friendships with a coworker are the ones that continue when you're no longer working together. It's easy to call someone your friend when you see them every day or every week. It's easy to call someone your friend when you interact and share some of the same work related issues. But, when those common interests are no longer front and center is the friendship still there? I have come across numerous people over the years from various jobs who at work were my friends. People that I commiserated with. People that I shared snippets of my life with. People that I broke bread with and drank wine with. My "friends"! Most of those people I don't even speak to anymore and it would take me quite some time to even remember their names. But....there are a handful of those who remain my friend today. Just a handful haha. The reason I'm reflecting today is because I've been working at a new employer for about a month and I can't stop thinking about some of the people that were quick to call me a friend, but never reached out to say goodbye. |
At the end of the day, take a moment to think of the friends who've stuck in there and kept in touch...even through social media!! Take a moment to think of those friends that simply dropped a line to say hey. Friendship isn't always about lunches and movies..sometimes its a simple reminder that hey I see you!! Just some thoughts....
